Advocacy & Policy

Representing the Collective Voice of Health Promotion Officers

SAHPOA represents Health Promotion Officers in national and provincial policy discussions that shape the future of healthcare in South Africa. We engage constructively with government, funders, and regulatory bodies to ensure that health promotion is recognised as a core component of universal health coverage. Our advocacy is focused, evidence-based, and aligned with national health priorities.

Advocacy and Policy

Why Advocacy Matters

Prevention and early intervention are essential to a sustainable healthcare system.

Health Promotion Officers play a vital role in:

  • Community-based screening
  • Health education and behaviour change
  • Referral coordination
  • Chronic condition support
  • Adherence and follow-up care

Policy frameworks must reflect this role clearly and practically. SAHPOA works to ensure that HPOs are recognised, integrated, and supported within national and private healthcare systems.

Policy Engagement

Policy Engagement

SAHPOA engages with:

  • The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF)
  • Medical schemes and managed care organisations
  • Stakeholders involved in National Health Insurance (NHI) implementation

Our approach is collaborative and solution-focused. We aim to strengthen the system, not create fragmentation.
